Becoming A Better Person

People expect success and when they don't get it, they get pissed, like what the hell am I doing wrong! Actually there may be quite a few things that you may be doing wrong which can hinder you from becoming a better person.

Basically you will have to find what is sucking your motivation and get rid of it. But here are a couple of things you might want to get rid of:

1. Ingratitude: People say it all the time, "be grateful","I'm grateful for today", of course, It sounds nice and good to say, but the fact of the matter is that life is relative. Think about this; I'm not close enough to starving to appreciate that I have food to eat. However, may be I fasted for 24 hours last week, and that definitely made me grateful to finally eat. Other kinds of deprivation can force you to be grateful. Nothing makes one grateful for being able to breathe more than an asthma attack. When you aren't grateful, you are only focusing on what isn't there and why you can't have it. Gratitude shocks you back into respecting your life, instead of complaining you don't have a different life.

Antidote: Force yourself to be grateful for a simple thing daily. Like me I have a gratitude journal where I write a list of things I'm grateful for everyday.

2. Envy: When I'm envious, I'm paralyzed. I can't focus on doing my best work if I wish I could be doing that other person's work. I can't love my parent If I wish I had some other person parent. Most importantly, I can't find out who I am if I'm wishing I was somebody else. That's what envy does, it blinds us to the blessings in our own life. It comes from believing that what isn't in our life is more important than what is. How are you supposed to stay motivated when all your energy is being spent worrying about what others have?

Antidote: Realize that envy is separated from the subject being envied. Notice your reactions to the success of others. Get off Facebook if you must do so, put your head down and work on yourself.

3. Impatience: So we all learn that Mark Zuckerberg became a billionaire in his early 20'S, and now we all think we have to be billionaire's in our early 20's. It's a good thing, but it's just not accurate for most of our realities. When i get impatient with my own progress, I end up quitting. But when I stay patient I do work that makes progress happen fast.

Antidote: Create a plan and measure progress. Stop Obsessing over the end goal and focus on the process today. Read a great man's biography and see the amount of time they had to work through.

4. Overwhelmed: I wake up each day knowing that 10tasks needs to be done. I want to do them all at once, so I end up doing nothing. I don't know how to work, plan a career, go to school, do my assignment, study, stay in shape, be social, pay my bills, help out at home, get 8+hours of sleep at night all at the same time.
Antidote: Simplify your life, you are probably saying yes to too many things. Organize your schedule, your to do and your desk, take one task at a time it is the only option. You can't skip through step one through nine.

5. Inaction: Taking action is the single most important thing you can do and inaction is the single most powerful motivation sucker.

Antidote: Commit to action everyday. Consistency is the key. Make yourself more scared of not doing something than you are of doing it.

 6. Loss of purpose/meaning: If you feel like what you are doing has no purpose, you are guaranteed to have zero motivation to do it. Life is meaningless if it's not purposeful. Without meaning we feel lost, and sometimes as we search for meaning, we realize it's not really there. The truth is that few of us only truly believe in some grand purpose for our lives.

Antidote: Get lost in some activity and stop waiting for an abstract explanation of why something makes life meaningful. Focus on doing good work, remind yourself that you don't need a grand purpose to be happy. Aim bigger, express yourself with bad poetry, bad painting, bad singing, e.t.c.

7. No skin in the game: If you have something to lose, it's easier to stay motivated. If you can't get the motivation to do something, may be you are too comfortable where you are. May bee you need to raise the stakes and put yourself in the position where there is something to loose. Sports are only fun to watch when you care about a certain team winning or loosing.

Antidote: Risk something and take a position.

8. Crappy people: If you're surrounded by people who suck, you are going to end up sucking too. If nobody around you is doing anything interesting, then how are you supposed to do something interesting? It's easy to be motivated if you are surrounded by motivation.

Antidote: Find a motivation and cut out crappy people in your life.
