How To Improve Your Writing Skills

Improving your writing skills is a lot easier and simpler than you think. I know there are thousands of articles published online daily and every one wants to stand out from the crowd but it takes a well written and captivating content to be different.

Writing is a process. Conjuring. Imagining. Screaming. Fantasizing. Creating. - Emeka Nobis

I have been writing since childhood and it's been one of my greatest hobbies. I started blogging because I saw it as one of the best platforms out there to get better at what I loved doing. It has developed me over the years and I have grown so much at it.

Good writing skills are essential for any profession.

What makes one a great writer?

The ability to effectively and distinctively communicate your message and your story in a clear and simple method.

I have put together these helpful tips and I'm sure it will improve you and make you a better writer.

1. Don't be afraid to be different

The comparison game is a trap. Don't fall into it. You should have your own voice and your own method. Don't try to be like everyone else. Be different, let your personality shine through. Write like you.

2. You are what you read

The best writers are great readers.

Read good books. Read as many as you can get your hands on, especially in the genre you write. If you don't read, then don't expect to be very good at writing because what you read determines how you write. Invest in a writing course, training, workshop, and retreat. Do some research too!

3. Write something everyday

If you want to get better at something, you have to practice it. Practice makes perfect. No matter how I feel about my writing, I still put down something everyday. It could be about how I spent my day, what I learned from an experience, what I'm grateful for, or the new word I just discovered, etc. Even on tough days, just keep writing. It keeps creativity alive.

4. Find a mentor/inspiration

Find an established or published writer who is doing what you want to do and learn from them. Imitate writers you admire, do as they do but do it in your own voice. Learn from them but stay true to your self.

5. Write to move a reader

This is one key thing that have helped me. I don't write to move the crowd because I am not sent to please everybody, I write to move at least one person. And I know that my type of targeted writing will touch everyone it needs to touch. So, it's important you know who you are writing for and take it seriously. Be consistent with who you are.

6. Write from a personal experience

You have to be able to connect with your audience in your own unique voice. Understand the basic principles of writing and develop a writing style. Don't bore your audience with grammar or big words, keep it simple. Write from your own experience and give examples, make it conversational in nature. Write contents that engages, delights, and inspires your readers. It helps you connect easily.

7. Edit your work ruthlessly

I know this is where the problem lies for most writers because editing takes time and quiet a lot of dedicated effort and concentration but it's all worth it. You wouldn't want to read a poor written content full of grammatical errors and mistakes. After you write, it's advisable you sleep over it. Check to see if it still makes sense after few hours or moments. Take your time to properly edit before you publish.
